Diaper alternativesSummary: Reduce the amount of waste generated by disposable diapers by adopting one of the alternatives - cloth diapers, flushable diapers and/or teaching the use of potty early on. Scope: International Every day more than 50 million disposable diapers end up in landfills. It can take over five hundred years for them to decompose. You can reduce that amount by using cloth diapers, flushable diapers and training your child to use a potty as early as possible. When using disposable diapers, choose brands that are more eco-friendly - based on natural and renewable materials. Cloth diapers are washed and no part is thrown to trash. Some brands are also made of organic materials. Flushable diapers have a biodegradable component which is either flushed in a toilet or composted and needs to be replaced with a new one. Helping a child to use a potty early on, known as elimination communication, can reduce the amount of diapers used as well as save money. Even when done part-time it helps cut down the use of diapers in two ways - less diapers are needed per day and typically also for a shorter period of time.
