Cotton is extremely versatile and is used for many products. Yet growing and harvesting cotton can take a heavy toll on the earth’s air, water, and soil, and has significant impacts on the health of people in areas where cotton is grown. Cotton cultivation uses approximately 11% of the world’s pesticides, even though it is grown on just 2.4% of the world’s land suitable for agriculture. Studies have shown that it takes about one-third of a pound of chemicals to grow enough non-organic cotton for one T-shirt. Some of the chemicals used are classified as toxic or carcinogenic by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In developing countries, the negative impacts can be even more severe.

When you need to buy new clothes for you or your family, choose the ones made out of organic cotton that has been grown using methods and materials that have low impact on the environment. Organic production systems reduce the use of toxins, help maintain healthy soil and build biologically diverse agriculture. Additionally, the use of genetically engineered seed is prohibited for organic farming. If organic cotton isn’t available, look for The Cleaner Cotton™. It uses less chemicals than growing conventional cotton, and uses farming methods that are better for the environment and the community. More about sustainable cotton is available at sustainablecotton.org.

Organic cotton can also be a good solution if you or your child is allergic or has asthma - having less toxins around them can have a positive effect. And when getting organic clothes, don't forget bedding and towels that rub against your skin for hours.

Change yourself - change the world!
